We have a government telling us we need more houses yet has an open door policy towards immigration. How many unemployed? How many in prison? Well that should cover the fruitpicking!!!! Oh and I thought asylum should be sought in the first safe country, so considering people have to move accross europe to get here does that make all the european countries unsafe?

Yes, unless they have a job to come to, don't bring in any diseases, TB etc and bring our NHS down. There are troubles all over the world these days so we simply cannot take in everyone who wants to come here. The rules on asylum seekers should be reviewed as it is not as though it is only the odd country at odds with itself as it used to be.

It should have been shut long ago as there are far too many scroungers in this country surely only people who have careers and jobs to go to should be allowed in to the country just like in Australia, Canada and New Zealand if these restictions had been put into effect years ago only people who wanted to give something back to the country that has accepted them would be here now and we would all be able to look forward to a better future. I am not saying Never allow foreigners into our country but only ones who have something worthwhile to offer

I may be a bit biased here, because I married a Russian Migrant worker! (Although she originally had only a one year visa, until we married). This Country has always been built on its Migrants (check your History), makes no difference how far you want to go back - Romans, saxons, vikings? How about a bit more up to date with the Heugenots, The first Jewish Migration! Not up to date enough? Try the Protestants of the sixteenth Century, and the second Jewish migration, or the laskaars and Indians that crewed our Merchant fleet (when Brittannia ruled the waves!), all of our Empire that helped us in the two world Wars - all entitled to British citizenship! The West Indians in the fifties, the Asians in the sixties? Or those fleeing Stalin and Hitler? If it was not for migration, this Country would still be living in mud huts, and share your luddite view! Like it or not migration is necessary. Our aristocracy was created by a Frenchman (William the Conquerer) who also gave us medieval architecture (including many of our churches), our Royal family is German, our language is a bizarre confection of Latin, Saxon, German, Indian and American, Our shops and banking systems (ergo, our economy)were created by the Jews, the entire Empire stood with us (twice! And losing far more men than the British!), even our first (decent) beers ere brewed by Dutch emigres! I do not like the idea that Immigrants can get benefits immediatley, but I also disagree with many of the workshy getting so much 'payment' for sitting on their backsides, leaving employers to bring in workers from all over the world! The vast majority of those that migrate here are far better educated than us, and certainly have a better work ethic! They are also ambitious, and improve themselves so that they can help their friends and families so that they do not have to rely on benefits and State handouts. You should also bear in mind those that migrate FROM this Country! An opportunity that you have - if you have the education, the work ethic, and the openness of mind to live in another cuture. I did.

I don't think we should shut the gates entirely, but then i am biased because i am married to an australian. I do think however that we should be far more selective about who we let in. There are more than enough people who fall into the category of unskilled labour in this country already to fill all the posts that there are in this field. Allowing in more people in this category can only badly effect those already here as the new arrivals undercut them in terms of pay. But at the same time we do have a shortage of workers in some other areas, particularly in fields such as medicine and teaching. Immigrants who have a skill to offer that we currently need, and those who have something to offer our societty as a whole should be welcomed, they provide a boost to our economy. And as lulu mentioned there are quite alot of Brits who have moved abroad, i know of some areas of both France and Spain where they are complaining of the large influx of British people, so it is all a matter of your perspective on the problem.

Immigrants is such a broad term and sometimes I actually get a little annoyed being one myself that people just broad brush this term. I came here from NZ and had to work damn hard to get a visa. I have worked every day I have been in this country, paid taxes, NHS and made no claims on any sort of welfare. Also might I add that my grandparents were English and moved to NZ in the early 1900's and my husbands parents moved to NZ in the late 1940's so I actually came here to find out more about my history as feel that I am part British. UK people regularly move from England and move to Aussie, NZ and Europe - recently there was a report saying 5 families per week move to Aussie or NZ. I get this all the time at work with people going on about immigrants this and immigrants that and when I say something they say "oh but not people like you", are you talking about everyone who has immigrated or just some sections of immigrants? I am sorry but it does get a little annoying for someone like me as I feel like people are taking pot shots at me all the time.

I don't think we can handle more immigrants and we shouldn't have let so many in in the first place,Australia won't take any and look at the size of that country,We don't need more diversity,we have enough with people of all races being born here legally,They get more help than any of us,There is polish people living a couple of doors down and they have new everything and music up loud and haven't a clue about putitng rubbish out etc, they only have to ask and they get,we cannot get anything as my husband was self employed and didn't pay enough stamp, yet he was employed from 16 years old when he left school to the age of 36 when he had to give up because of kidney failure and they say because he was self empoyed for 5 years, he hasn'tr paid enough stamp.I don't like the idea of people being killed and suffering in their own country b ut there are bigger countries that can take them and they won't because they don't want then there. We are n ot allowed to go to America or France,Australia or New Zealand etc without having savings and a job or say you are a plumber/police/carpenter and then you can get in but they don't like anybody going who can't pay their own way.If you want to live in Frnce, you have to have savings until you find work, but the french governement don't tell you how much you need to live on until they have gone thru you bank accounts etc and then they say you need x amount of money a year to live on so you don't use our facilities for free, why aren't we doing that.I can't emigrate because we are il,yet the warm weather will help my illness,if i just moved over to another country would they let me stay like we do to the immigrants.I THINK NOT
