I love museums, our one has shut for renovations until 2010 so it is annoying as my eldest son loves it as it has lots of stuff that they cover at school,i was born in London so have been to the two big ones when i was there and they are brilliant, also i bought a great wooden ornament from our museum,we should have more museums and less shops
Yowzer...............I'm giggling here....................you little tinker!! I think that museums have become more important to me as I've got older...............I feel that if you don't know where you've come from, you don't know where you're going!! Infact gi53 and I are planning a little trip to Manchester's museum of science and technology this weekend to see the Bodyworks collection !!! Lots of people hanging out there.....well just hanging out actually. I recently read that museums and the arts in general are suffering because of the 2012 olympics.....................money is being syphoned off left right and centre........................perhaps the olympics should be staged in Athens................... would save a lot of money methinks................sorry ! Have gone off at a tangent.
Museums have gotten cooler than when i was little, and we had to be dragged there on school trips. Alot of effort has gone in to making them more than just a dry and dusty collection of objects. We are very lucky in being surrounded by museums for virtually any subject that you can think of. The silly thing at the moment is that many of the big famous national collections are stagnating and becoming boring while the little ones are the most exciting. The British Museum for example is now closing many rooms for much of the time and the exhibits haven't been reorganised in ages, while the nearby Petrie Museum of Egyptology is having a major refit and I think is far better for Egyptian stuff even if it hasn't got the mummies. The same goes for the Natural History Museum, the exhibits have changed very little in the fourteen years we've been going and the kids are bored stiff by it now.
Gosh you surprise me gi53, you sound just the type of person who would love a spot of culture..Willmeakins, i dont go as often as i used to when my daughter was small, but yes i do think they are fascinating places, full of things to marvel at, and I would say there is something for everyone ( or most people)from tropical fish, to steam engines. old buses, Egyptology, fashion and lifestyles from other eras...my fave part of Liverpool's Museum is the Planetarium. we aslo have a marvellous place called Sudley House which gives a fascinating slice of life in another time. Also great museums down at Albert Dock, including the Beatles Museum. Boring?? Nothing to do in them???I dont think so!!!
